Oakland Swimming & Diving Dominates Mid-Con Awards

Oakland University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams took more than their fair share of Mid-Con accolades winning not only their fourth consecutive Mid-Con Championship, but taking home coach of the year, diver of the year, newcomer of the year, and two swimmer of the year awards. Oakland hosted the Mid-Con Championships the weekend of Dec. 5-7 and swept both titles outscoring the competition with a minimum of 182 points. Freshman breaststroker Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) was named both Newcomer of the Year and Co-Athlete of the Year for his performances at the Mid-Con Championships. Dickens broke two Mid-Con records in both the 100 (55.56) and 200 (2:00.92) breaststroke, and also won the 200 individual medley (1:53.00). Winning Mid-Con Athlete of the Year on the women's side was junior Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan). Korniyenko set new records in the 100 (57.22) and 200 (2:03.46) butterfly events, and took home first place in the 200 individual medley (2:08.69). Freshman diver Linda Keskey (Cokato, Mich.) was named Mid-Con Diver of the Year after winning both the 1-meter (390.40) and 3-meter (479.10) diving events. Taking home Mid-Con Men's Co-Coach of the Year honors was head coach Pete Hovland. This was Hovland's third honor in four seasons on the men's side. Thirteen other Golden Grizzlies were recognized by the Mid-Con on the men's swim team. Being named First Team All-Conference alongside Dickens, were swimmers Sean Broadbent (Windsor, Ont.), Doug Drazin (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Chris Lutz (Rochester, Mich.), Eric Lynn (Plymouth, Mich.), Nick McCollum (Fairfield, Ohio), Mike Parrish (Birmingham, Mich.), Ehud Segal (Givat Zeev, Israel), James Sewell (Omaha, Nebraska), and Bryant Steele (Novi, Mich.). The Mid-Con's Second Team All-Conference included Grizzlies Blaine Dolcetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.), Doug Fiore (Shelby Twp., Mich.), Martin Moen (Eugene, Oregon), and Tony Smucler (Tecumseh, Ont.). On the women's All-Conference First Team, Oakland contributed ten swimmers and one diver while two more swimmers were named to the Second Team. Receiving First Team accolades were Korniyenko, Keskey, Shelley Aurit (Batavia, Ill.), Tara Berringer (Eugene, Oregon), Karoline Freytag (Kronach, Germany), Holly Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.), Christina Moceri (Northville, Mich.), Maria Musialczyk (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Angela Simetkosky (Livonia, Mich.), Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan), and Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.). The second team honorees included Erin Meredith (Rockford, Mich.), and Lindsay Unrath (Dexter, Mich.). Both swimming and diving teams take a break from swimming action until the 27th of December when they travel to Florida for Christmas training.
