Dickens and Ward Named Mid-Con Athletes of the Week

Oakland University swimmers Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) and Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.) were tabbed Mid-Con Swimming & Diving Athletes of the Week for their performances throughout the week of November 11. Ward takes home her second consecutive honor while Dickens claims his first of the year. Dickens finished first in every event in which he competed in over the weekend in a dual meet against the University of Toledo. The The freshman set a new pool record in the 100 breaststroke (56.67), holding on to the top spot on the Mid-Con top performance list comfortably by a margin of 3.11 seconds. Dickens finished first with a season-best in the 200 breakstroke (2:03.72), while just missing the best time in the 200 individual medley (1:55.59) by 0.96. He also swam a leg in the winning 400 medley relay (3:28.37). Dickens??? time in the 100 breast is currently 12th best in the country, while his 200 breast ranks 23rd. Among freshman, Dickens' holds the top time for the 100 breast and places third in the 200. During the first week in January, Dickens will travel to Sydney, Australia to represent his home country Canada in the Jr. Pan/Pac's. Ward assisted her team to a 165-135 win over Toldeo by finishing first in the 200 (1:53.40) and 500 (5:05.02) freestyle events. The senior???s 500 free time was a season best, while she missed her previous season-best mark in the 200 free by .09 seconds. Ward went on to finish second in the 100 free behind teammate Oksana Strelets (Kazakhstan) and also swam a leg in the winning 400 medley relay (3:56.05). This is the second time she has been named Mid-Con Athlete of the Week. The women's swimming and diving team will return to swimming action this coming weekend when they host Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Saturday. The men's team will then join the women when Oakland hosts the Mid-Continent Conference championships from December 5-7.
