Wright State Meet Results The men's and women's swimming and diving teams went 1-1 this weekend swimming against Cincinnati on Friday and Wright State Saturday. The Bearcats swept both teams in dual meet action on Friday by scores of 148-113 over the men and 149-130 over the women. However, Oakland bounced back on Saturday to defeat the Raiders of Wright State University by scores of 129-103 (men) and 158-83 (women). On Friday night, the men won four of the ten events swam against Cincinnati. Martin Moen (Eugene, Oregon) won the 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 59.95 seconds - outswimming the competition by more than one second. In the 50-yard freestyle, it was Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) who took the top time with 21.23 seconds to give the Grizzlies the win. Freshman Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.) crushed the heat in the 200-yard breaststroke race in a time of 2:08.37 - beating the runner-up by more than six seconds. Oakland also took tops in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:10.23. On the women's side, the competition was much closer - with the Grizzlies winning six swimming events and both diving events. Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.) took first place in three individual events for Oakland against the Bearcats. Ward swam the 200-yard freestyle event in a time of 1:55.87 to place her first in the race. Ward also won the 50-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle events with times of 24.51 and 5:08.89. Freshman diver Linda Kesky (Cokato, Mich.) took top place finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with scores of 260.78 and 273.90. Last week's female Mid-Con Swimmer of the Week, Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) won the 100-yard butterfly event in a time of 58.62 while fellow Kazakhstan native Oksana Strelets took the top time in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.76. The Grizzlies also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:35.18. On Saturday, the men's swimming team managed to win nine swimming events out of 11. Freshman James Sewell began the Grizzlies winning spree by leading the 1000-yard freestyle heat in a time of 9:57.83. Sullivan then took top times in the 50-yard free and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 21.28 and 46.69 seconds. Another freshman, Andrew Coupland (Ottawa, Ont.) managed to win the 200 individual medley and 200-yard backstroke events in times of 1:57.01 and 1:54.85. Israel junior national champion Ehud Segal (Givat Zeev, Israel) took the top finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:54.24, over two seconds faster than the rest of the competition. Ohio native Nick McCollum (Fairfield, Ohio) won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.73 while teammate Dickens took the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.57. The men's team also captured the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.03. The women's swimming and diving team had much the same success as the men's team winning ten of eleven events and both diving events against the Raiders. Starting the meet off on the right foot, Oakland outswam the Raiders to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:51.38. Korniyenko was tops again for the Grizzlies in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:11.81 and the 200 butterfly with 2:08.42. Ward also continued her winning ways defeating all other swimmers in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 54.95. Kesky took the top score in the one-meter diving competition with 264.93 points while fellow teammate and freshman Andrea Endres (Marine City, Mich.) took the three-meter event with a score of 228.15. Strelets continues to dominate in the freestyle events capturing the top time in the 200-yard event in 1:58.18. Other Oakland swimmers to win their events were Tara Berringer (Eugene, Oregon), Karoline Freytag (Kronach, Germany) and Shelly Aurit (Batavia, Ill.) capturing the 200-yard backstroke (2:10.04), 500-yard freestyle (5:16.24), and 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.84). The women's team also defeated Wright State in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.84. The women's swimming and diving team returns to action next weekend when they host Illinois on November 9th at 1 p.m. The men's team resumes action when they travel with the women to Toledo to take on the Rockets on November 15 at 6 p.m.
