Grizzlies Capture Quadrangular Meet

Meet Results The Oakland University men's and women's swimming & diving teams went undefeated Saturday at the Quadrangular swimming meet in Rochester, Michigan. The two teams hosted West Virginia, Wayne State, Niagara, and Akron (women's team only). The meet gives the women's team a 4-0 record to start the dual meet season while the men begin at 3-0. The women Grizzlies had their closest score against the University of Akron with 138-105. The team went on to beat West Virginia 148-92, Wayne State 187-54, and Niagara University 198-44. Top times on the day for the women's teams came in the 400-yard medley relay (3:56.33) swam by Tara Berringer (Eugene, Ore.), Shelly Aurit (Batavia, Ill.), Tanya Koriyenko (Kazakhstan), and Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich.), and the 400-yard free relay (3:32.89)(Ward, Holly Miller - Fr. Lauderdale, Fl., Karoline Freytag - Kronach, Germany, and Oksana Strelets - Kazakhstan). Ward also excelled in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:55.10. Sophomore sensation Strelets had top times in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 24.27 and 52.72. Fellow Kazakhstan native Koriyenko swam the fastest 200-yard individual medley (2:08.78) as well as the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.06) on the day. Sophomore swimmer Berringer swam a time of 5:10.25 to swim the event in the fastest time of the day while in the 200-yard breaststroke event Aurit swam the meet's top time of 2:26.44 On the men's side, the Grizzlies closest competition came from West Virginia with the scores being 124-107 respectively. Other scores for the day were Oakland beating Niagara 172-51, and Wayne State 172-59. Top times of the day for the men's team came in the 400-yard medley relay (3:27.83) swam by Chris Lutz (Rochester, Mich.), Scott Dickens (Ancaster, Ont.), Ehud Segal (Givat Zeev, Israel), and Sean Broadbent (Windsor, Ont.). Sophomore standout Chris Sullivan looks to continue his sensational freshman year by taking the top time in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.66. Canadian Junior National Team member Dickens beat last year's top time for the Grizzlies in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:54.63 (last year's best time was 1:56.04 by Tim Johnson). Dickens also swam a fast time of 2:06.42 in the 200-yard breatstroke. Segal, another highly recruited freshman, took top times in the 200-yard butterfly (1:53.75) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.97). Finishing the meet with the 400-yard free relay, the men's team made sure they swam hard by beating each of its opponents with a top time of 3:10.00 (Andrew Coupland - Ottawa, Ont., Doug Drazin - West Bloomfield, Mich., Mike Parrish - Birmingham, Mich., and Sullivan). The men and women continue their swimming action on Friday, November 1 where they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to compete at 4 p.m.
