The Oakland University student-athletes truly excelled in the classroom in the fall semester of the 2001-02 academic year. A total of 152 student-athletes representing all 14 varsity teams and classes attained the Golden Grizzlies Excellence in Academics honor for the term. The minimum criteria for this recognition is a term grade point average of 3.0 with a minimum of 12 semester credit hours. Nine teams attained a gpa of 3.0 or better. Women's golf (3.27), women's volleyball (3.26) and men's soccer (3.24) had the top team gpa's. Megan Piar, a junior member of the women's softball team, recorded the top academic performance with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, while completing 16 credits as a marketing major. Piar's teammate, Nina Catanzaro (Jr., Biology), also recorded a stellar term with a 3.93 gpa. On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Rzepka (men's soccer, business administration) was nearly perfect with a 3.97 gpa while completing 14 credit hours. Ryan Williams (men's basketball, senior, sociology) was another top scholar with a 3.94 gpa.
