Oakland University head swimming coach
Pete Hovland announced today that the OU men???s and women???s swimming program has signed 10 prospective student-athletes to National Letters of Intent. Four of the signees will join the men???s program and six the women???s program. All 10 signees will attend Oakland in the fall. The Golden Grizzlies have signed Derek Allan, Tim Johnson, Andy Munoz and Chris Sullivan to National Letters of Intent for the men???s program and Tara Berringer, Karoline Freytag, Renie Green, Holly Miller, Christina Moceri and Lindsay Unrath to National Letters of Intent for the women???s program. ???Our goals this year in recruiting was to accomplish two things,??? head coach
Pete Hovland said. ???Depth and impact. ???We need to add depth in both the men???s and women???s program. We thought we could take advantage of the fact that we only graduate four women and two men. With the number of committments we have recieved thus far, we feel that we???ve accomplished that. We felt that we needed to replace the points lost to graduation by six seniors (Yvonne Lynn, Laura Sorley, Veronika Frolova, Megan Cagney, Haitham Hassan and Todd Duncan). With the 10 we???ve signed thus far, we have accomplished this as well. ???And finally we wanted to sign an impact swimmer or two in each program. An impact swimmer is the kind that will come in right away and finish in the top eight at the NICs and with improvement will make an NCAA cut. With athletes like Tara Berringer, Renie Green, Lindsay Unrath, Karoline Freytag and Holly Miller, we feel that we???ve accomplished this on the women???s side. As for the men, anytime you sign the number one ranked individual in the United States (Chris Sullivan) and the number one ranked Canadian (Tim Johnson) you have to feel good about the recruiting class. When you add in the Derek Allen, Andy Munoz and the others we???ve accomplished our goals. ???We are still talking to a couple other potential student-athletes. With additional signees this recruiting class could go from excellent to outstanding.??? Allan hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan where he will graduate Crestwood High School in June.
