TULSA, OKLAHOMA -- After the first day of competition at the 2001 Mid-Continent Conference Men's and Women's Golf Championships, host Oral Roberts looks poised to "four-peat" in both the men's and women's tournaments. With two of three rounds completed, the Golden Eagles hold a seven-stroke lead over second place Oakland and a ten-stroke advantage over third-place IUPUI. The Oral Roberts women have a commanding 33-stroke lead over Youngstown State, which sits in second place after a day of competition. Oral Roberts trailed Oakland by three strokes after the first round, with IUPUI one shot behind the Golden Eagles. Oral Roberts erased that deficit by shooting a 299 in the second round. Oral Roberts' Charleton Dechert shot a one-under 143 in the first two rounds, and holds a five-shot lead over Oakland's Gary Robinson, who is four shots over par after two rounds. Youngstown State's Matt Kempe shot a 151 on the first day to take third. On the women's side, Oral Roberts grabbed a 15-shot lead after the first round and built on it in the second round. The Golden Eagles finished the first day with a two-round score of 653, with is 33 shots better than Youngstown State, which shot a 686 in the first two rounds. All five of Oral Roberts' participants finished the first day in the top eight, led by Heidi Brown and Lindsay Jones, who finished the day with two-round scores of 162 and 164, which rank one and two after day one. Youngstown State's Stephanie Matasek and Oral Roberts' Brooke Fincher are three shots back.
