Golden Grizzlies Search For Gold In NIC Championships

The Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the second day of the NIC Championship where the women are currently in second place with 433 points and the men are in third with 324 points. The top three teams in the the women's bracket are the University of Cincinnati with 445 points, Oakland is in second and Western Kentucky knocked off Northern Arizona for third place with 354 points. In the men's bracket after day two, Southern Methodist is still on top with 613 points, the University of Cincinnati is in second with 418 points and the Golden Grizzlies round out the top three with 324 points. OU had three first-place finishes in day two of the championship. Senior tri-captain Yvonne Lynn took home the 100 back with the time of 55.94. Tonya Korniyenko took home another medal as she finished on top in the 100 fly with the time of 55.56. The 200 medley relay team of Lynn, Korniyenko, Veronika Frolova, and Danielle Ward started the fourth session with a gold medal with the time of 1:44.51. The Golden Grizzlies also had three second place finishes led by Ward who picked up a silver medal in the women's 200 free (1:48.56) edged out by defending NIC champion Maria Oberg who won with the time of 1:48.38. Dave Hartzel brought home a second place finish in the 200 free with the time of 1:38.43. Rounding out the second place finishes is the women's 800 free relay team of Ward, Tamara Swaby, Kelly Carlin, and Oksana Strelets (7:33.31). Oakland also had two three place finishes as the men's 800 free relay team consisting of Sean Broadbent, Marc Gray, Andy Schmidt and Dave Hartzel (6:43.67) bringing home a bronze. Frolova rounds out the top finishes for Oakland as she came in third in the women's 100 breast (1:05.73). Oakland will compete in their final competition tomorrow, Saturday February 24th in the final day of the NIC Championships. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. and Finals will take place at 7 p.m. Meet Results
