The Oakland University men's and women's swimming and diving team each placed in the top tier of the National Indepedent Conference Championships after the first day. The women are in second place with 506 points, the men are in third place with 148 points. This is a three-day event that is taking place at the Oakland University Aquatics Center February 22-24. The University of Cincinnati is on top in the women's competition with 193 points, the Golden Grizzlies follow in second and rounding out the top three is Northern Arizona with 177 points. In the men's competition Southern Methodist is on top with 267 points, while the Cincinnati Bearcats are in second with 188 points. The Grizzlies round out the top three as they head into day two. The Golden Grizzlies had three first-place finishes. Oksana Strelets won the women's 50 free with a time of 23.16. Also bringing home top honors were both women's relay teams. In the 200 free relay the team of Strelets, Tamara Swaby, Danielle Ward and Veronica Frolova won with the time of 133.81. In the 400 medley relay the team of Yvonne Lynn, Veronika Frolova, Tonya Korniyenko and Oksana Strelets placed first with the time of 3:46.00. Rounding out the top finishes for the Grizzlies were Dave Hartzel with a second-place finish in the men's 500 free with the time of 4:28.21. Also finishing second was Ward in the women's 500 free with the time of 4:54.33. Swaby finished in third in the women's 50 free behind teammate Strelets with the time 23.83. The NIC Championship will continue on Friday, February 23 at 10 a.m. The finals for the second day of action will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday.
