Oakland to Host NIC Championship February 22-24

The Oakland University men???s and women's swimming & diving team are set to host the 2001 National Independent Conference Championship. The 2001 event marks the second time that Oakland has hosted the meet -- the first time was in 1999. Last year the NIC Championship was held at Florida Atlantic University who will be one the participating team's in this years event. In addition to FAU and Oakland, eight other schools will participate in this event, including defending NIC champion in both men's and women's swimming and diving Cincinnati, Northern Arizona (women), University of Louisiana-Monroe, Illinois State (women), Houston (women), Southern Methodist (men), Texas Christian (men), and Western Kentucky. Nine athletes return to the 2001 NIC Championship to defend their titles ... Cincinnati -- Steven McLeod (1650 free), Kevin Dupuis (200 breast/400 IM), Nelly Jorgensen (100 free/200 free) and Maria Oberg (500 free/1650 free); Florida Atlantic -- Dariusz Szymanski (200 fly); Houston -- Falon Hopkins (100 fly); Western Kentucky -- Gordon Velman (100 back/200 back), Andrew Priest (100 breast) and Brandi Beckwith (100 back/200 IM). The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. all three days, while the finals will start at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for this event will be $5 for each individual session and $25 for an all-session pass.
