Oakland Lengthens Leads In Mid-Con Swimming and Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Oakland University men???s and women???s swimming and diving teams assumed commanding leads in the 2001 Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The men???s and women???s teams combined to win 15-of-18 events on the day as the men extended their lead out to 162 points and the women took a 136-point advantage. On the men???s side, Western Illinois stands second with 377.50 points, followed closely by IUPUI with 361. Valparaiso is fourth with 232. Western Illinois also stands second in the women???s competition with 412 points, followed by Valparaiso with 332 and IUPUI with 224. The Oakland women???s squad swept the entire nine-event slate. Senior Tamara Swaby (Kingston, Jamacia/St. Andrew) and freshman Tara Berringer (Eugene, Ore./Sheldon) turned in dominating performances with two individual wins apiece. Swaby won the 200 butterfly (2:07.06) and 50 free (23.90), while Berringer was victorious in the 100 backstroke (59.44) and 400 individual medley (4:44.74). Swaby was also a part of the winning 200 free relay team (1:36.95) and was joined by Berringer on the 400 medley relay (3:56.47). Other individual winners for Oakland were senior Devon Cunningham (Tecumseh, Mich./Tecumseh), junior Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) in the 200 freestyle (1:54.38) and sophomore Shelley Aurit (Batavia, Ill./Rosary) in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.62). Ward was also a member of both relay teams and Aurit participated on the 400 medley team. Freshmen Christina Moceri (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Holly Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) filled out the 200 freestyle relay for OU that narrowly missed the conference record in the event by .38 seconds. Oakland also won six of the nine men???s events. Senior Marc Gray (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams) won his second event of the Championships with a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:41.42). Senior Josh Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western), junior Jim Kanak (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and freshman Blaine Dolcetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Sir James Dunn) also took first place individually. Smith won the 200 butterfly (1:56.05), Kanak the 100 breaststroke (57.90) and Dolcetti the 400 individual medley (4:09.04). Preventing the Oakland sweep were victories by IUPUI sophomore Joe Hulse (Portage, Ind./Portage) in the three-meter diving (382.05 points), Valparaiso senior Tim Weidner (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect) in the 50 freestyle (20.82) and Western Illinois freshman Kevin Barrow (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) in the 100 backstroke (53.42). Senior Joel Wallace (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves) and freshman Andy Munoz (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) were part of both winning relay teams. Kanak and Dolcetti joined them in the 400 medley relay (3:29.94). Junior Doug Drazin (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and freshman Mike Parrish (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) also were members of the victorious 200 free relay (1:23.94) team. It was Munoz???s third relay win of the meet. The 2001 Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships conclude on Saturday, December 1. The prelims begin at 10 a.m. (EST) with the finals starting at 6 p.m. (EST)
