Oakland Leads After Day One of Swimming and Diving Championships

Session-1 Results INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Oakland University men???s and women???s swimming and diving teams started their quests for their third consecutive Mid-Continent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships by jumping out to early leads on both sides of the ledger. Oakland set Mid-Con season-best times in each of the events. After two events, the women lead with a score of 116 points, while the men are in first with 105 points. Oakland started the Championship by sweeping the top three places in the 1650 freestyle. After finishing second last year as a freshman, OU???s Angela Simetkosky (Livonia, Mich./Churchill), won the event with a time of 17:22.90. Freshman Kelsey Withrow (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) finished second in 18:00.01 and freshman Karoline Freytag (Kornach, Germany) third in 18:21.13. Last year???s top three finishers in the men???s 1650 freestyle found themselves at the top again. However, senior Marc Gray (Rochester, Mich./Rochester Adams) outdueled teammate Andy Schmit (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) this year, edging him for first with a time of 15:52.20. Schmit finished second in 15:54.70. IUPUI???s John Winter (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) repeated his third-place performance with a time of 16:23.81. The women???s 800 freestyle relay went to Oakland???s team of freshman Holly Miller (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.), senior Tamara Swaby (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew), sophomore Kelly Carlin (Novi, Mich./Mercy) and junior Danielle Ward (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) with a time of 7:47.70. Valparaiso was second in 8:01.79 and Western Illinois third in 8:08.46. On the men???s side, Oakland???s team of Gray, Schmit, senior Josh Smith (Auburn, Mich./Bay City Western) and freshman Andy Munoz (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) finished first in a time of 6:52.76.Western Illinois placed second in 7:11.03, with Valparaiso third in 7:12.97. The Mid-Continent Conference Swimming Championship will continue on Friday, November 30, with the preliminaries starting at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. The events will be the 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 400 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Also in the morning session, the women???s one-meter diving prelims will be followed by the men???s three-meter diving prelims and finals. The women???s one-meter diving finals will take place directly after the men???s 50 freestyle in the evening session. All times are Eastern Standard. MEN???S TEAM STANDINGS 1. Oakland 105 2.
