A pair of soccer standouts have been named the Mid-Continent Conference???s Student-Athletes of the Month for September. UMKC senior Larry Scheller (Belleville, Ill.) and Oakland senior Anita Rapp (Lillehammer, Norway) both used some offensive fireworks to become the first honorees for the 2001-02 academic year. Scheller helped the Kangaroos to the best start in school history, netting seven goals in seven matches. After scoring his first goal of the season in a 5-0 win over Western Michigan at the Drury Puma Classic, Scheller exploded for a hat trick against IPFW, a 6-1 UMKC win. That four-goal performance over two matches earned him tournament MVP honors as well as Mid-Con Player of the Week accolades. His hat trick against IPFW was only the third in school history, and tied UMKC single-game records for goals and points scored(six). Scheller scored goals in four straight matches, adding a tally at Drake and two at home against Centenary. His offensive performance was a primary reason that the preseason Mid-Con favorite Kangaroos started the year 5-2. He has broken into the UMKC career top ten in both goals scored (15) and points (35), and helped the Kangaroos to a consistent rank in the NSCAA???s Midwest Region. Rapp made her return from a year's absence one to remember, as she helped the Golden Grizzlies to a 7-2 record to open the year. Rapp, who returned to the Golden Grizzlies after redshirting last year to play in the 2000 Summer Olympics with the Norwegian National Team, had a hand in most of Oakland's offensive efforts. After scoring in the Golden Grizzlies' win over No. 24 (NSCAA) Marquette to open the season, Rapp had two goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over UW-Milwaukee. Her efforts aided in Oakland's Wireless Verizon Cup title, gave her Offensive MVP honors for the tournament, and led to her selection as the Mid-Con Player of the Week. Her solid play didn't stop there, however. She scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in a 2-0 win over Purdue, which was ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA's Great Lakes Region at the time of the game. She closed the month by posting a goal and four assists in Mid-Con favorite Oakland's conference wins over Southern Utah and IUPUI. She totaled five goals and seven assists for 17 points in the first month of the season, and helped Oakland solidify its rankings in both the NSCAA and Soccer Buzz Great Lakes Region rankings.
