Oakland Sweeps Mid-Con Swimming & Diving Titles

The Golden Grizzlies men???s and women???s swimming and diving programs defended their titles as Mid-Continent Conference champions in 2000 in a resounding way. The Oakland men???s team finished with a Mid-Con record 1042 points in front of Western Illinois (593), IUPUI (548) and Valparaiso (513). The OU women claimed first with a Mid-Con record 1093 points. Valparaiso (675) followed in second place, while Western Illinois (550) finished third and IUPUI (427) and Youngstown State (364) claimed fourth and fifth places, respectively. OU wrapped up the 40-event championship with first place finishes in 37 events. Throughout the three days of competition, eight Mid-Con and one OU Aquatics Center pool records were set. Oakland???s Haitham Hassan (Sr., Alexandria, Egypt) and Tamara Swaby (Jr., Kingston, Jamaica) were named the 2000 Mid-Con Athletes of the Year, while OU???s Sean Broadbent (Fr., Windsor, Ontario) and Shelley Aurit (Fr., Batavia, Illinois) earned 2000 Mid-Con Newcomer of the Year honors. Oakland???s head coach Pete Hovland was named the 2000 Mid-Con Women???s Coach of the Year and co-2000 Mid-Con Men???s Coach of the Year. IUPUI???s Jim Shuck was named co-2000 Mid-Con Men???s Coach of the Year with Hovland. The 2000 Mid-Con Divers of the Year honors were awarded to Ben Spence (Sr., Liberty, Missouri) of Western Illinois and Brandi Goettsch (So., Hubbard, Ohio) of Youngstown State. Spence won both the one and three-meter boards with 443.15 and 486.95 points, respectively. Goettsch finished first on the three-meter board with a Mid-Con record 492.20 points and fourth in one-meter diving. Hassan led the way for the Golden Grizzlies as he set Mid-Con records in the 100 fly (48.70), also a pool record, and 200 IM (1:50.60) on Saturday. He was also a part of the 200 medley relay team that claimed first place with Jim Kanak, Joel Wallace and Doug Drazin. Oakland???s Danielle Ward (So., Brighton) set a Mid-Con record finishing first in the 500 free in 5:00.26. Goettsch set the fourth record Saturday in the women???s three-meter diving with 492.20 points. Oakland???s Yvonne Lynn (200 Back - 2:04.73), David Hartzel (200 Back - 1:49.29), Andy Schmit (500 Free - 4:32.96), Swaby (100 fly - 57.69), Aurit (200 breast - 2:21.85, 200 IM - 2;10.41), Mark Quinn (200 breast - 2:04.41), Kelly Carlin (100 free - 54.08) and Broadbent (100 free - 45.79) all claimed individual firsts in the final day of competition. Oakland???s women???s 200 medley relay team (1:48.65) and both its men???s (3:03.09) and women???s (3:34.81) 400 free relay teams also claimed first-place honors.
