ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland men's soccer team finished its first season in the Horizon League in impressive fashion as they earned a third-place finish during the regular season and won its first-ever Horizon League postseason match with a 2-1 victory comeback victory over Valparaiso at the OU Soccer Field. The Golden Grizzlies finished the season 7-7-5 with a 4-2-1 record in league play and made their seventh consecutive semifinals in the league tournament.
Nick Kristock won the 2013 Senior CLASS Award for Division I men's soccer. The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men's soccer coaches, national soccer media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - classroom, community, character and competition. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Joey Tinnion was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 5 team after leading the Golden Grizzlies in points, goals and assists while holding a 3.66 grade-point average as a history with secondary education major. He also was named to College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week after scoring four goals in the three matches including game-winners against Detroit and Wright State.
During the season the Oakland defense had an impressive streak without allowing a goal in 402:42 of action going 2-0-2 over that span. Sean Lewis was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week three times on Sept. 16, Sept. 30 and Oct. 14. The Golden Grizzlies also had an impressive win over Detroit at the OU Soccer Field coming from behind with two second-half Tinnion goals for the 2-1 victory.
The Golden Grizzlies played the first-ever Horizon League contest in Oakland Athletics history on Sept. 7 as they played to a 1-1 draw against Valparaiso at the OU Soccer Field. Oakland reached as high as No. 5 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's Midwest poll. Oakland graduated seven seniors: Sean Lewis, Morgan Spann, Sean Magee, Miche'le Lipari, Scott Messer, Nick Kristock and Lucas Diener.
