Wiese, Edwards and Allen Receive Additional Postseason Honors

Rochester, Mich. (Dec. 21, 2005) ???C For the third time in his career, Oakland senior goalkeeper Jeff Wiese (Omaha, Neb.) has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region team, while senior Chris Edwards (Glasgow, Scotland) earns the nod for the second straight year. Additionally, Golden Grizzly freshman Wes Allen (Austin, Texas) has been tabbed third team All-Freshman by College Soccer News. Wiese raked in quite a list of honors throughout his career, making him one of the best athletes in Oakland soccer history as well as one of the best keepers in the region. He is the 10th OU player to make the list at least three times and was one of the first two to earn All-Mid-Con honors all four years announced last month. As a freshman in 2002, Wiese was the league???s Newcomer of the Year, helping lead the Golden Grizzlies to their first conference tournament title and first appearance in the NCAA???s. During his tenure, he was additionally an eight-time Defensive Player of the Week, two-time Academic All-Conference selection and three-time Golden Grizzly Excellence in Academics award winner. He was also named to the NSCAA/adidas Men???s Scholar All-American first team in 2003 and is on several Mid-Con career and single-season lists. On Saturday, Dec. 17, Wiese received his Bachelor of Science degree in business with a major in financial information systems. This is the second year in a row Edwards has made the all-region team. The striker has been no stranger to earning accolades throughout his career. Last month, the senior forward joined Wiese as the only other Golden Grizzly to earn all-conference honors all four years. Edwards has been one of OU???s most prolific scorers, tallying 36 goals during his tenure and racking up 78 points. He finished his career listed in the top 20 in the conference in career shots, goals and points. Edwards is a five-time Mid-Con Player of the Week and was additionally selected to the league???s all-tournament team in 2002. He has also been on the Academic All-Conference team and a Golden Grizzly Excellence in Academics honoree. ???Both of these guys have been mainstays in our program the last four years and for them to repeat as all-region selections is well merited,??? head coach Gary Parsons praised. ???We will miss them both in our starting lineup and they will certainly be hard to replace.??? Allen has racked up quite a list of honors in his first year with the Oakland back line. The defenseman first was named to the all-conference list heading into the 2005 Mid-Con Tournament, becoming the first OU freshman to make the first team since Wiese did it in 2002. He then received all-tournament accolades after helping lead the Black and Gold to the league championship match. Allen was one of five Golden Grizzlies to start every match this season and is a large part of why Oakland finished the season second in the league in goals against average and goals allowed. ???Wes came in as a freshman and turned out to be a real pleasant surprise,??? Parsons said. ???He was able to step into a starting role and perform consistently for 90 minutes nearly every day. He was definitely a solid performer this season and with a little more experience, he???ll do extremely well for us.???
