Chris Sullivan (Rockford, Mich.) and
Tanya Korniyenko (Almaty, Kazakhstan) were named Mid-Con???s Swimmers of the Week for the week ending Jan. 27th. Both swimmers helped lead Oakland to victories over traditional Division III powerhouse Kenyon College. Sullivan led his team to a 150-138 victory while Korniyenko kept the women???s undefeated 2003-04 season alive with a 164-135 win. During the meet, Sullivan captured three individual titles, broke one pool record, and swam a leg on a winning relay to help the Golden Grizzlies in the victory. The junior finished first in the 50 freestyle, setting a new pool record with a time of 20.36, which beat the previous mark by .33 seconds. Sullivan then took the 100 free (45.56), won the 100 fly (50.38) and swam a leg on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:34.07). This is the second time Sullivan has been named Mid-Con Athlete of the Week this season. Korniyenko won three titles and broke two pool records in the Golden Grizzlies??? victory over the Ladies of Kenyon College. The senior captured the 200 butterfly with a record-setting time of 2:06.24, breaking the old pool record of 2:07.89. She set another record in the 100 fly, posting a time of 57.25 - .39 seconds faster than the previous best. Korniyenko also won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:10.17. Korniyenko is enjoying a successful season and was just recently named Mid-Con???s Athlete of the Month for the month of December. Both Sullivan and Korniyenko will look to lead Oakland this weekend when both teams face Saint Bonaventure on Friday night at the OU Aquatics Center and then travel to East Lansing to take on the Spartans of Michigan State on Saturday.
