The Oakland University baseball team dropped its season opener to Georgia State 5-1 in Atlanta today. The Golden Grizzlies gave up five unearned runs in the loss as they committed two errors. Oakland falls to 0-1, while Georgia State improves to 5-3. OU's
John Griffin (Bloomfield Hills/Western Michigan) gave Oakland a 1-0 lead as he had an RBI double to rightfield that drove in
Spencer Hynes (Clarkston/Clarkston) who reached on an error. After holding the Panthers scoreless for six innings, Oakland made two errors to start the bottom half of the seventh. After a sacrifice bunt, GSU's Kyle Breitbach doubled down the leftfield line to score both runs. The eighth inning witnessed two walks and a hit batsman by righthanded pitcher
Adam Sokoll (Lake Orion/Lake Orion) and then a three RBI double by Breitbach. OU's
Justin Robertson (Lapeer/West) pitched six innings, giving up five hits, two runs, no earned runs and struck out four. Robertson falls to 0-1. Griffin led Oakland offensively with a one-for-three performance with an RBI. Georgia State's Ryan Patrylo threw a complete game, giving up three hits, one run, no earned runs, walked two and struck out nine. Breitbach led the GSU bats as he went two-for-four with five RBI. Oakland and Georgia State will square off again tomorrow in Atlanta. The game will start at 2 p.m.
